Catch the Wind in Your Yacht

8 November 2009

Eight friends from across the world, London, Sydney and Magnetic Island were taking to the high seas of the Caribbean in a luxury split yacht charter.

The logistics of getting all those people, with all those different obligations to Airlie Beach on the same day, ready for action, took a bit of havering. Then what boat to hire? What company? A quick check with a friend with connections in the business (he used to work down there) brought a recommendation for Queensland Yacht Charters at Abel Point and the wheels were in motion.

Much studying of the brochure and website, much emailing and finally the boat was decided upon.

A ten-berth catamaran — a cabin per couple, two bathrooms and two single berths for storage.

The die was cast, the booking made and the deposit paid for the holiday to be taken at the beginning of September. Some of the participants took the adventure more seriously than others — some took navigation and sailing courses, while others devoted their energies to getting wine shipped up from Sydney and participating in endless discussions about food.

When D-day finally came, it was pouring with rain and blowing a gale the friends departed Townsville on a Greyhound bus to meet friends aboard for the dream holiday. The friends woke up to the next morning to brilliant blue skies and a light breeze in the Caribbean yacht charter. . . as if the horrendous conditions of the past few days had never happened. A two-hour briefing ashore followed, and then it was time to cast off. A skipper came with us to see us out of the marina and give us some hands-on coaching.

There wasn’t much wind so it was a case of trying to sail and having to motor, but we achieved the inlet without too much trouble and set about putting down the anchor. By the end of the week this was to become the easiest of tasks, but that first afternoon was a bit fraught.

And that was how it went on — sailing from one idyllic spot to the next, dropping anchor, snorkelling, swimming and walking, eating the wonderful food and drinking the fine wines. There was perfect weather every day, some days breezier and more exciting for the sailing, and some days dead calm necessitating the motor.

The Caribbean with its spectacular coral where friends snorkelled with a young turtle, will be a special memory. Likewise the spectacular sunsets and sunrises over the sea and over the wooded hills will be remembered for a long time.

The six friends planned for the Caribbean yacht charter holiday of a lifetime, and unusually, expectations were met.
