Are you ready for retirement?
And those who were nearing the age of retirement according to the aarp found themselves facing age discrimination, employment act or no employment act. Employers often thought “Well, no point in training him/her up in a new job – he/she is going to be retired in five years or so. Better give the job to a younger person so I only have to train them once.”
This form of age discrimination affected women, especially. Women who had trained for a profession then taken time out to raise their children often wanted to return to the workforce after their children had left home. But as these women were often a decade or so of the retirement age, they often faced the same problem of age discrimination – and they couldn’t even bring decades of experience in the workforce to the negotiation table.
