For a fashion designer the ability to articulate and analyze what is happening with a garment allows correction, amplification and the development of the design in question. It is true that a great deal of great design occurs through happy accident, it is an enormous advantage to be able to reflect on the effect of your work, to explain what was intentional and to try to gauge how close you are to actually achieving your desired effect and result. To have an awareness of the elements and principles of design will allow you to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of other designers, and to spot trends and changes in the market.
