So what does an occupational therapist do exactly? Occupational therapists help people that have problems with social interaction, living independently, self-care, work. Such functions can be affected by an accident or developmental delays, illness, disease, disability or disorder. When providing such services, occupational therapists apply a variety of different theories and methods, but the choice depends on the specific needs of each patient. It all starts with an evaluation of the patient’s condition, by assessing his or her fine motor skills, visual motor skills, handwriting skills, oral motor skills, sensory processing skills.
