What Happens if You Forget to File for Unemployment Benefits?
Receiving unemployment benefits is great (and much needed for most people). In order to receive the benefits, you must file your request weekly. This can be done either by phone or online and is done on every Sunday. If you have found the occasion where you were unable to file your weekly claim, even for one week, your claim becomes inactive and you must reopen your file in order to begin receiving benefits again, although you will be missing on benefits for the week you forgot to file. If you have a legitimate reason for not filing your claim that week (a sickness or family emergency perhaps), it may be possible to receive back pay for the previous week. This can be done by speaking with a representative from the unemployment agency who will review your claim and make a decision.
