The tenure of dental assistant courses is usually 1 year or less and the curriculum includes relevant theoretical instruction gained by attending classroom lectures and laboratory course work along with pre-clinical instructions in dental assisting skills. Practical experience is gained in dental clinics, dental offices and dental schools with work that is interspersed during the course. Successful completion of the course is dependent on passing the examination which results in the award of a certificate or diploma. There are also two year programs offered by junior and community colleges that lead to the awarding of a relevant associate dental assistant degree. Entry in to such programs requires the minimum academic level of a high school diploma or equivalent.

To be eligible to apply for the dental assistant certification examinations a prospective candidate needs to complete a course from an accredited institution offering a dental assisting program. At last count there were 269 such institutions across the country. Accreditation for these institutions is granted by the Commission on Dental Accreditation which is a part of the ADA or the American Dental Association.

Whilst undergoing dental hygienist training you will learn a variety of skills which will enable you to learn how to collect information about a patient's oral and medical health history. You will learn skills in the use of a diverse set of tools such as hand and rotary instruments and ultrasonic devices to clean and polish teeth, including removing calculus, stains and plaque (hard as well as soft) from all surfaces of the teeth. You will be taught how to apply preventative materials like fluorides and sealants and fluorides to the teeth. You will be taught to use x-ray machines, to take dental pictures, and how to develop the film.

When I first found out I was going to have a baby I instantly started researching careers from home. I only had 8 months at that point to start training from home while I was still working full time. I found a great opportunity with a company on line that trained me to be a medical transcriptionist and I completed my training before my baby came. I am now gainfully employed and with the help of the on line companies needing a transcriptionist I never had to leave my house to find the work. I can work as often and for as long as I like.
