A dental assistant education only begins after one has successfully graduated from High School or has acquired equivalent qualifications. For anyone seriously interested in training as a dental assistant it is advisable that they start preparing early by selecting the right subjects whilst in high school which would include biology, chemistry and health. With a high school education biased towards science, it will be possible to enroll for a dental assisting program conducted by an institution accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation under the American Dental Association (ADA).

Entry in to most dental assistant programs will require a minimum academic level of a high school diploma or its equivalent. Specific programs may also require the applicant to have studied science and/or computers whilst at high school to qualify for admission. As an alternative, the applicant will have needed to have had relevant work experience as a dental assistant either full time for two years or part time for four years. After obtaining the initial certification, the individual has to be re-certified each year by earning continuing educational credits. Apart from the DANB certification, there are various organizations, predominantly at state level, that offer registration as a dental assistant through their individual dental assistant programs.
