Rattan hanging chairs are known by both the materials and construction of the chair, but there are other types of chairs that resemble these chairs, which are made of different materials and have a similar design. For example, there is the Hanging Egg Chair. This is just what is sounds like, a chair constructed of solid material (often a hard plastic), which hangs suspended from above. Like the higher end rattan hanging chair, these hanging egg chairs can cost as much as several thousand dollars. There is also something called a Hanging Day Chair. This looks a lot more like the traditional hanging rattan chair, but is made with more solid material. Again, these can be costly pieces of furniture, going for between two and three thousand dollars.

In the early days, aerion chairs were chairs used primarily by executives, in part because of its high price tag. And many of those executives were relative youngsters running some of the country’s most exciting companies: internet dot.com firms. The chair became synonymous with the early Internet days, and then later found a home in the traditionally more conservative corporate office environment. Prices of the chair have always been high, they have come down to within reach of more modest budgets, and its popularity has grown from there. Today, some 15 years later, aeron chairs continued to be found in offices everywhere.

The Hag Capisco chair has gained fans around the world for its unique design and ergonomic features. The standard chair is designed for use with work surfaces that are 29.5” or higher. The chair retails at around $1,200, so it is not likely to be found in great quantities throughout offices everywhere. However, the chair can be found online at about half the price; still out of reach for the typical office budget, but a little closer to the highly popular aeron chair. Whatever the case, HAG does warranty the product for five years. The warranty covers both the chair itself and any fabric on the chair, though it naturally excludes normal wear and tear. There is a lifetime warranty on the gas lifts, and HAG guarantees delivery of spare parts for 10 years.

The eileen gray bibendum chair is considered a classic piece of furniture design, and has endured for decades as a favored chair design. The chair gets its name from the Michelin Man, and one look at it will tell you why: it looks just like a Michelin Man sitting down to take a load off his feet. The back of the chair is rounded and seamed in a way that makes it look like rows of tires. Gray, an Irish immigrant, who studied in Paris and later opened a gallery in that city, died at the age of 98, shortly after a successful retrospective of her work was held in London. But the charm of her chair design lives on: the chairs currently fetch upward of five thousand dollars.

Eileen Gray Bibendum Chair A Classic of Design

21 November 2009

The Eileen Gray bibendum chair has a history as long and storied as the chair itself is broad and portly. The chair was introduced in 1929 and it was named after the Michelin man. One look at the chair will tell you why: it looks just like the Michelin Man sat down and opened his arms. It is today, one of the most widely recognized chairs designs in the world, and its designer the most celebrate female designer of all time. The chair is the very picture of whimsy, with overstuffed cushions and a seemingly too-frail frame, but it is also comfortable and inviting. And functional. The whimsy of the chair design belies the fact that it took more than four years to design.
