Precision Surface Grinding Of D-2 Tool Steel
Tool steels, such as D-2, H-13, M-2 and 420 stainless can pose a real problem when it comes to precision surface grinding. These steels certainly perform well, but they are such a pain in the neck to grind!
Most tool and die, mold making and precision machine shops have figured out what works and what doesn’t work, but this usually comes with a lot of expensive experience. Rather than waste precious time experimenting with different surface grinding wheel materials, various coolants, unusual wheel grits and the like, it makes more sense to find out what other people have learned.
In fact, you might even consult the wheel manufacturer, such as Norton or Baystate. They have made the wheels for various purposes, you would think they have some clue as to how to use them! Funny though, most toolmakers are too independent or stubborn to ask. Kind of like asking for directions I guess.
You can find out all about how to grind these difficult materials on the website: http://precisiontoolgrinding.com which talks all aboutgrinding steel.
